Our first project that deals with looking at form and expression through "figure grounds". Figure grounds are mainly in black and white, trying to exaggerate yet simply define what the 'basics' of the design will consist of. We took existing parks/gardens and gave them what we thought would be their figure ground...
From Merlyn, (my professor):
"Modern Organic, Agrarian, and Artistry Concepts:
The teaching goal of this first project is for you to explore creative methods for generating ideas through research of design precedents, and developing fundamental visual and verbal expression capabilities. This figure ground project explores precedent analysis strategy and technique (operations) in garden design, where your focus is on developing personal talents in understanding the forms and materiality of built works and their form-generating principles. Special emphasis will be placed on growing your design vocabulary through exploring and disclosing ‘your take’ on precedents of exemplary existing gardens. By/through ‘your take,’ the intent is to be as open-ended and as subjective as possible ... you’re encouraged to see and disclose things that others may not notice, or may not think to disclose. The essence of personal creativity is to grow confidence in divergent thinking."
